Quick reference, the post-salah dhikr sequence:
1. Astaghfirullah × 3
2. Allahumma anta-s-salam... × 1
3. Ayatul Kursi (Quran 2:255)
4. Tasbih Fatimah: SubhanAllah × 33, Alhamdulillah × 33, Allahu Akbar × 33, La ilaha illallah × 1
5. Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas × 1 each (× 3 after Fajr and Maghrib)
Time required: 3-5 minutes
The Prophet ﷺ never left a salah without dhikr afterwards. The companions narrate that they would recognize the prayer had ended by his loud takbir afterwards (Bukhari 841, Muslim 583). This guide gives you the complete authentic sequence, what to say, how many times, the Arabic, the transliteration, and the hadith reference for each.
1. Astaghfirullah × 3
Immediately after salam, the Prophet ﷺ would say Astaghfirullah three times. (Sahih Muslim 591)
Astaghfirullah, Astaghfirullah, Astaghfirullah.
("I seek the forgiveness of Allah", said three times.)
2. Allahumma anta-s-salam wa minka-s-salam
After the three astaghfirullahs, recite (Muslim 591):
Allahumma anta-s-salamu wa minka-s-salam, tabarakta ya dha-l-jalali wal-ikram.
("O Allah, You are Peace, and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, O Possessor of Majesty and Honour.")
3. Ayatul Kursi (Quran 2:255)
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi after every obligatory prayer, nothing prevents him from entering Paradise except death." (Sunan al-Nasa'i 9928, classified Sahih)
The verse (Quran, Al-Baqarah 2:255):
Allahu la ilaha illa huwa, al-hayyu-l-qayyum. La ta'khudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm. Lahu ma fi-s-samawati wa ma fi-l-ard. Man dha-lladhi yashfa'u 'indahu illa bi-idhnih.
("Allah! There is no god but He, the Living, the Self-Sustaining. Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and on the earth. Who can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they do not encompass anything of His knowledge except what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation does not tire Him, and He is the Most High, the Most Great.")
4. Tasbih Fatimah
The Prophet ﷺ taught his daughter Fatimah (RA) this practice when she asked for a servant. He said it would be better for her than a servant. (Sahih Muslim 596)
After every obligatory salah, recite:
| Phrase | Count | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| SubhanAllah (سُبْحَانَ اللهِ) | 33 | Glory be to Allah |
| Alhamdulillah (الْحَمْدُ للهِ) | 33 | All praise is for Allah |
| Allahu Akbar (اللهُ أَكْبَرُ) | 33 | Allah is the Greatest |
Then to complete to 100, recite once:
La ilaha illa Allah, wahdahu la sharika lah, lahu-l-mulku wa lahu-l-hamd, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir.
("There is no god but Allah, alone with no partner. To Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise. He is over all things capable.")
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever recites this after every prayer, his sins are forgiven even if they are like the foam of the sea." (Sahih Muslim 597)
5. The three Quls: Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas
After Tasbih Fatimah, recite each of the three Quls once:
- Surah Al-Ikhlas (Quran 112)
- Surah Al-Falaq (Quran 113)
- Surah An-Nas (Quran 114)
After Fajr and Maghrib, recite each three times. The Prophet ﷺ said the three Quls suffice as protection from all things (Sunan Abi Dawud 5082, Tirmidhi 3575).
6. Additional dhikr (optional sunnah)
Du'a after Fajr and Asr
Allahumma a'inni 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik.
("O Allah, help me to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You well.", Abu Dawud 1522)
Protection from Hellfire (after Fajr and Maghrib, 7 times)
Allahumma ajirni mina-n-nar.
("O Allah, save me from the Fire.", Abu Dawud 5079; recite 7 times)
Du'a for general protection
La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.
("There is no power nor strength except with Allah.")
FAQ
Do I have to recite all of this after every prayer?
The core sequence (Astaghfirullah 3x, Tasbih Fatimah, Ayatul Kursi) is sunnah muakkadah, strongly emphasized but not strictly obligatory. Missing them doesn't invalidate salah. Start small and build the habit.
Can I use a tasbih counter or my fingers?
Both are valid. The Prophet ﷺ counted on his right hand's fingers. Using a digital counter or a physical tasbih is permitted, it's the dhikr that counts.
Should I move from the prayer place before dhikr?
It's sunnah to stay sitting facing Qibla and do the dhikr in your prayer spot. The Prophet ﷺ would only turn around (face the people) briefly. You can stand and walk while doing dhikr if needed.
Is reciting dhikr aloud allowed?
Yes, both aloud and silently are permitted. The Prophet ﷺ would raise his voice slightly with takbir after salah (Bukhari 841). In private, silent recitation is also valid.
