Jumu'ah (Friday) is the best day of the week in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best day on which the sun rises is Friday. On it Adam was created, on it he entered Jannah, on it he was expelled from it." (Muslim). The Friday congregational prayer, Salat al-Jumu'ah, replaces Dhuhr that day for adult Muslim men.

"O you who believe! When the call is made for prayer on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave aside business. That is best for you, if only you knew." (Quran 62:9)

Practical tip: Jumu'ah times shift slightly week to week as Dhuhr moves. Set up a Friday-specific reminder so you don't accidentally book a meeting through it. FivePrayer has a dedicated Jumu'ah notification you can enable.

Who must pray Jumu'ah?

Jumu'ah is obligatory (fard 'ayn) on every adult Muslim man who is:

  • Free (not enslaved).
  • Resident (not a traveler on long journey, per most schools).
  • Of sound mind and health.
  • Not legitimately excused (severe illness, fear, etc.).

Women, children, travelers, and the sick are excused from Jumu'ah but can attend and the prayer is valid for them. If women attend, they pray Jumu'ah, not Dhuhr.

When is Jumu'ah?

Jumu'ah is held during the Dhuhr time window. It typically starts shortly after the sun passes zenith, with the khutbah (sermon) first and the 2-rakat prayer immediately after.

The exact start time depends on the masjid. Most start the khutbah 10–30 minutes after Dhuhr enters.

How Jumu'ah is performed

  1. Arrive early. The earlier the better. A hadith ranks the reward by how early you arrive (Bukhari).
  2. Pray 2 rakat tahiyyatul masjid when you enter, even if the khutbah has started.
  3. Listen silently to the khutbah. Two khutbahs separated by a brief sit. Speaking during the khutbah invalidates the reward of Jumu'ah.
  4. Pray 2 rakat Jumu'ah in congregation behind the imam. The imam recites Al-Fatihah and another surah aloud in both rakat.
  5. Pray sunnah after. 2 or 4 rakat at home, per the sunnah.

Sunnah before and after

Before Jumu'ah

  • Ghusl (full bath) on Friday, strongly emphasized.
  • Wear your best clothes and use perfume (men).
  • Trim nails, brush teeth (miswak), be presentable.
  • Recite Surah Al-Kahf, Friday's special surah. A hadith: "Whoever recites Surah Al-Kahf on Friday, a light will shine for him between the two Fridays." (Hakim)
  • Send abundant salawat on the Prophet ﷺ.

After Jumu'ah

  • Pray 2 or 4 rakat sunnah at home (or in the masjid before leaving).
  • Make du'a, particularly in the last hour before Maghrib, which contains a moment when du'a is accepted.

Etiquette and special acts

  • Silence during khutbah. Don't speak, don't text, don't fidget noisily.
  • Don't step over people's necks to get to the front, find a spot from behind.
  • If you arrive late, sit where there's space, don't disturb existing rows.
  • Send salawat abundantly. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best of your days is Friday. So send salutations upon me much on that day, for they are presented to me." (Abu Dawud)

If you miss Jumu'ah

If you miss Jumu'ah for a valid excuse (illness, travel, no nearby masjid), pray Dhuhr instead, 4 rakat, on your own. The fard is fulfilled.

If you miss Jumu'ah without excuse, repent. The Prophet ﷺ warned that those who miss Jumu'ah three consecutive times without excuse have a seal placed over their hearts (Abu Dawud). It's serious.

FAQ

How many rakat is Jumu'ah?

The Jumu'ah prayer itself is 2 rakat (replacing the 4 rakat of Dhuhr). Add the 2–4 sunnah after.

Can women attend Jumu'ah?

Yes, and if they do, the prayer counts. They are not obligated to attend but are welcomed.

Can I pray Jumu'ah online?

No, Jumu'ah requires physical congregation. Online streams of khutbahs are educational but don't count as Jumu'ah. You pray Dhuhr instead.

What if my work won't let me leave for Jumu'ah?

The Quran is clear: leave business for the remembrance of Allah. Talk to your employer; in most jurisdictions a brief religious accommodation is required.
