About the Umm al-Qura calculation method
Mecca uses Umm al-Qura, the method named after the General Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques and refined by Umm al-Qura University in Mecca. Fajr is set at 18.5 degrees below the horizon. Isha is fixed at 90 minutes after Maghrib, extended to 120 minutes during Ramadan. These are the times broadcast across speakers throughout the Masjid al-Haram.
Because Mecca is the source of the Umm al-Qura calibration, its times are inherently authoritative. The Masjid al-Haram's adhan, broadcast live across the world, is the reference timing for the method. FivePrayer's Umm al-Qura preset matches the Haram timing exactly.
Major masjids and the Muslim community in Mecca
Masjid al-Haram, the Sacred Mosque, surrounds the Kaaba and is the most visited masjid in the world. After recent expansions, it can host over 4 million worshippers during peak Hajj. The mataf (the circumambulation area) is the inner ring, and the building extends outward through multiple floors and outdoor courtyards.
Beyond the Haram, Mecca has hundreds of neighbourhood masjids including Masjid Aisha (Tan'eem), Masjid Jin, and Masjid Bay'ah. Each neighbourhood masjid prays its own iqama on a slight delay after the Haram so that residents who didn't reach the Haram can still pray jamaat locally.
Qibla direction from Mecca
Inside Mecca, the Qibla is the Kaaba itself, no bearing calculation needed. When praying in the Masjid al-Haram, you face the Kaaba directly. Outside the immediate vicinity, the Qibla points to the Kaaba from your position; for someone north of Mecca, Qibla is south, and so on. Most Meccan buildings are oriented so that at least one wall directly faces the Haram.
Practical tips for praying in Mecca
Praying in the Haram: Iqama is called about 10 to 15 minutes after adhan. Arrive earlier during peak times (Friday, Ramadan, Hajj season) when the mataf fills up an hour in advance. For Fajr especially, many worshippers stay in the Haram from Tahajjud until sunrise.
The reward multiplier: Praying one rakat in the Masjid al-Haram is equivalent to 100,000 rakat elsewhere (Ibn Majah 1406). This includes both fard and sunnah prayers performed inside.
Practical timing during Umrah/Hajj: The five daily prayers organize your entire day in Mecca. Tawaf and Sa'i can be paused for jamaat and resumed afterward. Plan your itinerary around prayer time blocks rather than fixed clock times.
