Quick facts about Eid prayer:
• Rakat: 2
• Takbirs: 7 extra in rakat 1, 5 extra in rakat 2 (school variations exist)
• Time: after sunrise (~15 min above horizon) until just before Dhuhr
• No adhan, no iqamah
• Khutbah: after the prayer (not before, unlike Jumu'ah)
• Where: open ground (musalla) is strong sunnah; masjid is also valid
• Women: explicitly encouraged to attend (Bukhari 351, 974)
Eid prayer is the celebratory community prayer offered twice a year, on the 1st of Shawwal (Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan) and on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah (Eid al-Adha, marking the day of sacrifice during Hajj). It is 2 rakat with extra takbirs, prayed once in the morning, followed by two khutbahs. There is no adhan and no iqamah, the imam simply begins, and the community follows.

What is Eid prayer?
Eid prayer (Salat al-Eid) is a 2-rakat congregational prayer that distinguishes Muslims on their two festivals. It is similar in structure to the regular salah, but with one major addition: extra takbirs in each rakat, raised hands with each, and a meditative pause between them.
The majority of scholars classify Eid prayer as Sunnah Muakkadah, a strongly emphasized sunnah that the Prophet ﷺ never abandoned. The Hanafi school classifies it as wajib. All schools agree no Muslim should miss it without a valid reason.
When to pray Eid
Eid prayer is offered in the morning, after the sun has risen by "a spear's length", approximately 15 minutes after sunrise, when the prohibited time of prayer at sunrise has passed. It can be prayed until just before Dhuhr enters (zawal).
- Eid al-Fitr: slightly delayed, to give people time to give Zakat al-Fitr and to eat a few dates first.
- Eid al-Adha: prayed earlier, so that the qurban (sacrifice) can be performed afterward.
Most masjids today schedule Eid prayer between 7:00 and 9:00 AM depending on local sunrise. Check your local masjid for the exact time.
Where to pray Eid
The strong sunnah is to pray Eid in an open prayer ground (musalla) outside the city, not inside the masjid. The Prophet ﷺ prayed Eid in the open ground of Medina, not in his masjid, even though his masjid had greater virtue. The reason: Eid is a public communal display, the whole community gathers, men, women, children, and visitors, in one wide place.
Praying Eid in a masjid is valid and remains common today, especially in bad weather or in cities without open ground. Both options are correct.
How to pray Eid (step by step)
Stand in rows behind the imam. There is no adhan and no iqamah. The imam announces the beginning, sometimes with "Assalatu Jami'ah", or simply starts with the takbir.
Rakat 1
- Niyyat: intend "2 rakat sunnah Eid prayer behind this imam, for Allah."
- Takbiratul ihram: the imam says Allahu Akbar, you raise your hands and say it silently with him. This is the 1st takbir.
- Du'a al-istiftah: recite the opening du'a (Subhanaka Allahumma...) silently.
- 7 extra takbirs: raise hands with each takbir, drop them between, and pause briefly. (Note: schools differ on whether the takbiratul ihram counts toward the 7, Hanafi counts 3 extra after the ihram, Maliki and Shafi'i and Hanbali count 6 or 7 extra. Follow your local imam.)
- Ta'awwudh and Bismillah silently.
- Al-Fatihah, imam recites aloud; you listen.
- Surah, commonly Surah Al-A'la (87) or Surah Qaf (50).
- Ruku, two sujood as normal.
Rakat 2
- Stand up for rakat 2 with the imam.
- 5 extra takbirs: raise hands with each, pause briefly. (Hanafi: 3 extra before ruku. Shafi'i: 5 before Fatihah. Maliki: 5 including the standing takbir. Follow your imam.)
- Al-Fatihah, imam recites aloud.
- Surah, commonly Surah Al-Ghashiyah (88) or Surah Al-Qamar (54).
- Ruku, two sujood, tashahhud, salawat, and salam.
The prayer itself takes 5-10 minutes. Then the imam stands for the khutbah.
The Eid khutbah
After the prayer (not before, unlike Jumu'ah), the imam delivers two short khutbahs with a brief sitting between them. The khutbah covers Eid themes, gratitude, the meaning of the festival, communal reminders.
Listening to the khutbah is sunnah, not obligatory. Some classical opinions allow leaving after the prayer, though staying is far better.
Sunnah of the Eid morning
The Prophet ﷺ followed a beautiful, joyful routine on Eid mornings. These are sunnah, not obligatory, but each one is part of the festival spirit:
- Ghusl, full ritual bath before going out to pray.
- Best clothes, clean, new if possible. Men may wear perfume.
- Eat dates before Eid al-Fitr, an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7). The Prophet ﷺ would not leave for Eid al-Fitr without eating first.
- Do NOT eat before Eid al-Adha, wait until after the qurban (sacrifice), then eat from it. This is the reverse of Fitr.
- Walk to the musalla if possible, and return by a different route. (Sahih al-Bukhari 986)
- Pay Zakat al-Fitr before the prayer (if Eid al-Fitr).
- Recite the takbir on the way:
Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, la ilaha illallah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillahil-hamd.
("Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and to Allah belongs all praise.")
Men recite this aloud; women recite it quietly. The takbir starts on the night before Eid al-Fitr and continues until the imam begins the prayer. For Eid al-Adha, the takbir continues for the 4 days of Tashriq (the days after the qurban).
Eid al-Fitr vs Eid al-Adha
| Aspect | Eid al-Fitr | Eid al-Adha |
|---|---|---|
| Date | 1 Shawwal | 10 Dhul Hijjah |
| Marks | End of Ramadan fasting | Day of sacrifice during Hajj |
| Eating before prayer | Yes, odd number of dates | No, wait until after qurban |
| Special charity | Zakat al-Fitr, before the prayer | Qurban (sacrifice), after the prayer, 3 days |
| Time of prayer | Slightly later (gives time for Zakat) | Earlier (qurban must follow) |
| Takbir period | Last night of Ramadan through start of prayer | 9 Dhul Hijjah through 13 Dhul Hijjah (5 days) |
| Length of celebration | 3 days commonly | 4 days (Eid + 3 days of Tashriq) |
If you miss the congregation
If you miss the masjid Eid prayer, the majority of scholars recommend praying 2 rakat at home in the same form (with the extra takbirs), either alone or with your family. Some Hanafi scholars say no qadha is required. But praying it at home, quietly, with intention, is the strongest position.
If you arrive after the imam has started: join him for whatever you catch, then complete the missed rakat after his salam (with the extra takbirs in those rakat).
FAQ
Is there an adhan for Eid prayer?
No. The Prophet ﷺ explicitly did not have an adhan or iqamah for the two Eid prayers. The imam simply begins. (Sahih al-Bukhari 960)
Can children attend Eid prayer?
Yes, the Prophet ﷺ ordered everyone, including children and women, to come out. It is a community celebration.
What surahs are sunnah to recite?
The Prophet ﷺ commonly recited Surah Al-A'la (87) in rakat 1 and Al-Ghashiyah (88) in rakat 2; or Qaf (50) in rakat 1 and Al-Qamar (54) in rakat 2. Both are authentic sunnah (Sahih Muslim 891).
Do I need to give Zakat al-Fitr before Eid prayer?
Yes. Zakat al-Fitr must reach those in need before the Eid prayer for it to count as the obligation. Paying it 1-2 days earlier in Ramadan is the safest practice.
Can women pray Eid at home?
Going to the musalla is the explicit sunnah. If circumstances prevent it, praying 2 rakat at home in the same form is recommended.
