Quick facts about Friday du'as:
• The special hour: Bukhari 935 / Muslim 852, du'a in it is accepted
• Most likely time of the hour: after Asr until Maghrib (majority)
• Salawat: in abundance, your salutations are presented to the Prophet ﷺ (Abu Dawud 1531)
• Surah Al-Kahf: a light between the two Fridays (al-Nasa'i 1374)
• Masjid du'a: "Allahumma-ftah li abwaba rahmatika" entering, "Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik" leaving (Sahih Muslim 713)
Every week, the ummah of Muhammad ﷺ is given an entire day with its own status, its own prayer, its own surah, its own dhikr, and most extraordinary of all, an hour inside it when du'a is not refused. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday. On it Adam was created, on it he was admitted to Paradise, on it he was expelled from it, and the Hour will not be established except on Friday" (Sahih Muslim 854).
This guide covers every authentic du'a and act of dhikr for Friday: the special hour and when to find it, the recommended dhikr for the day, du'as for the khutbah, entering and leaving the masjid, the sunan before the prayer, and what to recite while walking to the masjid. Each section cites its source.

The special hour of acceptance
The hadith is reported by Abu Hurayrah (RA). The Prophet ﷺ spoke of Friday, then said:
"There is on it an hour, no Muslim servant catches it while standing in prayer asking Allah for something except that Allah gives it to him." And he gestured with his hand to indicate how brief it is.
Sahih al-Bukhari 935; Sahih Muslim 852
Two extraordinary details. First, the brevity: the Prophet ﷺ gestured with his hand to show its smallness. Second, the certainty: "no Muslim catches it... except that Allah gives it to him." There is no qualifier. If you are in it and asking, you receive.
The scholars have differed on exactly when this hour falls. There are over thirty positions. The two strongest are:
- Between the imam sitting on the minbar and the end of the prayer. This is supported by Sahih Muslim 853 and held by many scholars including al-Nawawi.
- The last hour before Maghrib (after Asr). This is supported by Sunan Abi Dawud 1048 and held by Ibn al-Qayyim, who considered it the strongest position. He noted that this is when the ummah is gathered for du'a, when fasting people break their fast, and when the parallel to the moment Adam was created (Friday before Maghrib) is most direct.
Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani favored the first position; Ibn al-Qayyim favored the second. The wise practical conclusion: make abundant du'a in both windows, since you cannot know which is the hour and Allah has hidden it so that the entire day is filled with seeking.
Recommended dhikr for the day
1. Surah Al-Kahf
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever recites Surah Al-Kahf on Friday will have a light shining for him between the two Fridays" (Sunan al-Nasa'i 1374; Sahih al-Jami 6471). The window is from Maghrib on Thursday until Maghrib on Friday. The surah contains four stories about the four greatest trials of human existence: faith (the People of the Cave), wealth (the man with two gardens), knowledge (Musa and al-Khidr), and power (Dhul-Qarnayn). Reciting it weekly is the weekly inoculation. See our complete guide to Surah Al-Kahf on Friday.
2. Salawat in abundance
The single most repeated instruction for Friday in the prophetic teaching is to send salawat in abundance. The Prophet ﷺ said:
"The best of your days is Friday. On it Adam was created, on it he died, on it the trumpet will be blown, and on it the swoon will overtake all. So send salawat upon me in abundance on this day, for your salawat will be presented to me."
Sunan Abi Dawud 1531; Sunan al-Nasa'i 1374, sahih
Every salawat you send is presented to the Prophet ﷺ. There is no other day where this is stated as explicitly. Many scholars recommend a minimum of 100 salawat distributed across the day. The simplest form is:
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad, wa 'ala ali Muhammad.
"O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad."
The longer, more complete form is Salat al-Ibrahimiyyah (the salawat recited in tashahhud), and it is especially recommended on Fridays.
3. Special istighfar
Friday is the day of weekly reset. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The five daily prayers, Jumu'ah to Jumu'ah, and Ramadan to Ramadan are an expiation for what is between them, as long as major sins are avoided" (Sahih Muslim 233). Beginning the week with istighfar in abundance, especially "Astaghfirullah wa atubu ilayh" and Sayyid al-Istighfar (Bukhari 6306), turns Friday into the weekly day of return.
Du'a after Asr (the most likely window)
If you can only set aside one window of focused du'a on Friday, make it after Asr until Maghrib, the position favored by Ibn al-Qayyim as the strongest for the hour of acceptance. The practical approach: pray Asr, sit on your prayer mat (or wherever you can be undisturbed), and spend the remaining time in continuous du'a, salawat, and istighfar.
Du'a topics for this hour:
- Forgiveness for yourself and your parents
- Tawfiq (success) in your obligatory worship
- Protection from fitnah, especially the four trials of Surah Al-Kahf
- Specific personal needs: rizq (sustenance), marriage, children, health
- The ummah, the oppressed, the suffering
- Hidayah (guidance) for those who have strayed
- A good end (husn al-khatimah)
- Paradise without reckoning, and protection from the Fire
Open with hamd (praise of Allah), follow with salawat, then make the du'a, and close with salawat and "rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah wa qina 'adhab an-nar" (Quran 2:201). This is the prophetic structure of an accepted du'a.
Du'a during the khutbah
Silent du'a in the heart during the khutbah is permitted, but verbal speech, even saying "be quiet" to someone, is prohibited. The Prophet ﷺ said: "If you say to your companion on Friday while the imam is delivering the khutbah, 'Be quiet,' you have spoken in vain" (Sahih al-Bukhari 934).
The recommended du'a moments:
- Before the khutbah begins, while waiting after the adhan, make personal du'a out loud or silently.
- Between the two khutbahs, when the imam sits briefly, this is a strong window for du'a. Many scholars consider it part of the special hour.
- During the khutbah itself: silent du'a in the heart is allowed. When the imam makes du'a aloud, say "Ameen" silently. Do not raise your hands during the khutbah, as this is not the practice of the Prophet ﷺ or the salaf.
Du'as entering and leaving the masjid
Every visit to the masjid, including for Jumu'ah, begins and ends with specific du'as taught by the Prophet ﷺ.
Entering the masjid
اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ
Allahumma-ftah li abwaba rahmatik.
"O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy."
Sahih Muslim 713
The Prophet ﷺ also began with salawat upon himself before this du'a. The full practice: step in with the right foot, say "Bismillah," send salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ, then recite the du'a above.
Leaving the masjid
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ
Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik.
"O Allah, I ask You of Your bounty."
Sahih Muslim 713
Step out with the left foot, send salawat, then recite this du'a. The pairing is profound: you enter asking for mercy (the spiritual), you leave asking for bounty (the worldly). The masjid sits between the two as the place that orients them both.
What to recite walking to Jumu'ah
The walk to the masjid is itself an act of worship. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever performs ghusl on Friday then comes early to the masjid on foot, for every step he takes there is the reward of one year of fasting and prayer" (al-Tirmidhi 496; al-Nasa'i 1381, sahih).
Recommended dhikr while walking:
- Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ, the most appropriate dhikr for Friday.
- Completing Surah Al-Kahf if you have not finished it yet.
- The four foundational phrases: SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illa Allah, Allahu Akbar.
- Personal du'as for the week ahead.
After the Jumu'ah prayer
The Prophet ﷺ recited Ayat al-Kursi after every fard prayer (al-Nasa'i 9928, sahih), and the regular post-salah adhkar apply to Jumu'ah as well. Then he prayed the sunnah after Jumu'ah, either four rakat or two, as authentic narrations describe both. Once you have completed the sunnah, the day is not yet over, the hour of acceptance may still be ahead.
Some scholars recommend reciting the following after Jumu'ah, based on a narration: "Surah Al-Fatihah, Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Nas, seven times each" (Ibn al-Sunni, with weakness in the chain). The recommendation is found in some traditional manuals but the strict narration is not as strong as the foundational hadith. The safer practice: recite the regular post-salah dhikr (33 SubhanAllah, 33 Alhamdulillah, 33 Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illa Allah wahdahu la sharika lahu...) and add personal du'a.
Sunan to follow before Friday prayer
Friday has a full set of recommended preparations. See our complete Jumu'ah prayer guide for details. The core sunan:
- Ghusl on Friday, the Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever among you comes to Jumu'ah, let him perform ghusl" (Sahih al-Bukhari 877).
- Wear your best clean clothes and apply perfume (men).
- Come early to the masjid; the earlier you come, the higher the reward.
- Walk to the masjid on foot if practical.
- Pray tahiyyat al-masjid (two rakat greeting the masjid) on arrival, even during the khutbah.
- Cut nails, trim mustache, clean teeth with miswak.
- Recite Surah Al-Kahf at some point between Maghrib Thursday and Maghrib Friday.
- Send abundant salawat across the entire day.
FAQ
When exactly is the hour of acceptance on Friday?
The two strongest positions are: (1) between the imam sitting on the minbar and the end of the prayer, and (2) the last hour after Asr until Maghrib. The latter is the position held by Ibn al-Qayyim and many scholars, supported by Sunan Abi Dawud 1048. Make du'a abundantly in both periods. The hour is hidden, like Laylat al-Qadr, so that the entire day is filled with seeking.
Why is Surah Al-Kahf recited on Fridays?
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever recites Surah Al-Kahf on Friday will have a light shining for him between the two Fridays" (Sunan al-Nasa'i 1374, Sahih al-Jami 6471). The surah contains four powerful stories about life's greatest trials: faith, wealth, knowledge, and power. Reciting it weekly is a reminder against the four greatest fitan.
Why is salawat increased on Friday?
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best of your days is Friday. On it, send salawat upon me in abundance, for your salawat will be presented to me" (Sunan Abi Dawud 1531). On the day Allah set apart for our ummah, the ummah is asked to remember its Prophet in abundance. Many scholars recommend a minimum of 100 salawat on Friday.
Can I make du'a during the khutbah?
Silent du'a in the heart is permitted, but speaking, even to tell someone to be quiet, is prohibited. The Prophet ﷺ said: "If you say to your companion on Friday while the imam is delivering the khutbah, 'Be quiet,' you have spoken in vain" (Sahih al-Bukhari 934). Make du'a before the khutbah, between the two khutbahs (if the imam sits briefly), and after the prayer.
What should I recite walking to the masjid for Jumu'ah?
Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ is the most strongly recommended dhikr while walking to Jumu'ah. You may also recite remaining verses of Surah Al-Kahf if you have not completed it, or make general dhikr. Walking to Jumu'ah itself carries enormous reward: "for every step there is the reward of one year of fasting and prayer" (al-Tirmidhi 496).
