Quick facts about Jamak & Qasar:

Qasar: shorten Dhuhr, Asr, and Isha from 4 rakat to 2
Jamak: combine Dhuhr+Asr, or Maghrib+Isha, at one prayer time
Distance: approximately 80-88 km (~50-55 miles) minimum
Duration: Hanafi, under 15 days; majority, under 4 days at destination
Never shortened: Fajr (2) stays 2; Maghrib (3) stays 3
Never combined: Fajr always alone

Travel is one of the great mercies in the shari'ah of prayer. Allah commands consistency in the five daily prayers, but He lightens them for the traveler. Qasar (al-qasr, "shortening") cuts the 4-rakat prayers in half. Jamak (al-jam', "combining") allows you to pray two prayers together at one time. The Prophet ﷺ used both on his journeys, and his Companions transmitted the exact method. The Quranic basis is unambiguous:

"And when you travel through the land, there is no blame upon you for shortening the prayer..."
, Quran, Surah An-Nisa 4:101

This guide covers both qasar and jamak, how they work alone, how they work together, and how to apply them on a real journey.

What is Qasar?

Qasar means shortening the 4-rakat prayers, Dhuhr, Asr, and Isha, to 2 rakat each. Fajr (2 rakat) and Maghrib (3 rakat) are never shortened. They are prayed at their normal length even on travel.

When the Prophet ﷺ traveled, he prayed qasar consistently. Ibn Umar (RA) said: "I accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he never prayed more than two rakat on travel until Allah took him." (Sahih al-Bukhari 1090)

The Hanafi school considers qasar obligatory for a valid traveler, a Hanafi traveler who prays the full 4 rakat has done something wrong. The Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali schools consider qasar a permitted concession (rukhsah), strongly preferred but not strictly required. Either way, qasar is the way the Prophet ﷺ traveled.

What is Jamak?

Jamak means combining two prayers at one prayer time. Only two pairs may be combined:

  • Dhuhr + Asr
  • Maghrib + Isha

Fajr is always prayed alone at its own time. Asr cannot be combined with Maghrib.

There are two forms of jamak:

  • Jamak Taqdim (early combining): pray both prayers at the time of the earlier one. For example, at Dhuhr's time you pray Dhuhr then Asr together.
  • Jamak Ta'khir (late combining): pray both prayers at the time of the later one. For example, you delay Dhuhr to Asr's time and pray them together at Asr's time.

The Prophet ﷺ used both forms on his expeditions, Anas (RA) reported he would combine Maghrib and Isha if he set off after the sun declined (Bukhari 1112). At the Farewell Hajj, he combined Dhuhr and Asr at Arafah (Sahih Muslim 705).

Conditions to qualify as a traveler (musafir)

To use the traveler's concessions, you must meet these conditions:

  1. Cross the boundary of your hometown. Qasar begins after you leave your city's residential limits, not before.
  2. Travel a qualifying distance. Approximately 80-88 km (~50-55 miles) or more. Hanafi: ~81 km. Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali: ~88 km. Modern derivations vary slightly; any travel that classically qualifies as "a journey" is sufficient.
  3. The travel is for a permissible purpose. Hajj, business, family visits, study, vacation, all qualify. Travel for a clearly sinful purpose does not, in classical fiqh.
  4. You intend to travel beyond the threshold. Wandering or short trips that happen to cover the distance do not count if there was no intention.

How long do you stay a traveler?

This is one of the most-asked questions. The schools differ:

SchoolMaximum stay at destination still considered traveler
HanafiUp to 14 days (intending to stay 15+ days makes you resident)
MalikiUp to 4 days at destination, excluding entry/exit days
Shafi'iUp to 4 days at destination, excluding entry/exit days
HanbaliUp to 4 days at destination (more than 20 prayers' worth)

If you intend to stay longer than the threshold, you become a resident at the destination from day one, you pray full prayers. If you stay shorter, or if your stay is open-ended and uncertain, you remain a traveler. The Prophet ﷺ once spent 19 days on a campaign at Mecca and shortened the whole time because his return was uncertain (Bukhari 4298).

How to pray jamak qasar: Dhuhr + Asr

Example: Jamak Taqdim with Qasar, at Dhuhr's time, combining Dhuhr and Asr and shortening both to 2 rakat each.

  1. Make wudu (or tayammum if no water). Face the Qibla.
  2. Niyyat for Dhuhr: "I intend to pray Dhuhr, 2 rakat qasar, combined with Asr (jamak taqdim), for the sake of Allah."
  3. Takbiratul ihram. Pray 2 rakat exactly as a normal 2-rakat prayer (Fatihah + surah in both, ruku, sujood, tashahhud, salam).
  4. End with salam to your right and left.
  5. Stand up immediately. Do not engage in lengthy du'a or other prayer between them, the two should follow each other directly.
  6. Niyyat for Asr: "I intend to pray Asr, 2 rakat qasar, jamak taqdim, for the sake of Allah."
  7. Takbiratul ihram. Pray 2 rakat exactly the same way. End with salam.

That is the complete Dhuhr + Asr combination. Total: 4 rakat instead of 8. Total time: 5-7 minutes.

For Jamak Ta'khir: at Dhuhr's time, intend to delay Dhuhr to Asr's time. Then at Asr's time, pray Dhuhr first (2 rakat qasar) followed immediately by Asr (2 rakat qasar). Same steps.

How to pray jamak qasar: Maghrib + Isha

Important: Maghrib is never shortened. It stays 3 rakat even on travel. Only Isha is shortened.

  1. Wudu, face Qibla.
  2. Niyyat for Maghrib: "I intend to pray Maghrib, 3 rakat, combined with Isha (jamak taqdim), for Allah."
  3. Pray Maghrib in full, 3 rakat with the normal tashahhud after rakat 2 and the final tashahhud after rakat 3. Salam.
  4. Stand immediately.
  5. Niyyat for Isha: "I intend to pray Isha, 2 rakat qasar, jamak taqdim, for Allah."
  6. Pray 2 rakat as a normal 2-rakat prayer. Salam.

Total: 5 rakat instead of 7. The Witr (3 rakat) still follows separately if you choose to pray it.

Qasar vs Jamak vs Jamak Qasar: table

ConcessionWhat it doesAffects which prayers
Qasar onlyShorten 4-rakat prayers to 2; pray each at its own timeDhuhr, Asr, Isha
Jamak onlyCombine two prayers at one time; rakat counts unchangedDhuhr+Asr or Maghrib+Isha
Jamak QasarBoth, shorten AND combineDhuhr+Asr (both 2), or Maghrib (3) + Isha (2)

You can do any combination. Some scholars discourage using both concessions if neither is strictly needed; others encourage taking both because the Prophet ﷺ took both. Both views are valid.

Combining prayers without traveling

Generally, you cannot jamak without traveling. There are specific exceptions:

  • Heavy rain or storm, Maghrib+Isha may be combined at the masjid (most schools).
  • Fear or danger, combining is permitted to ensure prayers are not missed.
  • Hajj at Arafah, Dhuhr+Asr are combined at Dhuhr's time (jamak taqdim) by everyone at Arafah.
  • Hajj at Muzdalifah, Maghrib+Isha are combined at Isha's time (jamak ta'khir) by all pilgrims.
  • Illness or significant hardship, some scholars permit jamak (Hanbali in particular).

Qasar without travel is not permitted. The shortening is exclusively tied to the journey.

FAQ

Do I have to combine prayers when traveling?

No. Jamak is optional even on travel, you can pray each prayer at its own time and just shorten. The Prophet ﷺ often did exactly that.

Can I do jamak ta'khir if I forgot to intend it at Dhuhr's time?

Hanafi and Shafi'i schools say you should intend the ta'khir before Dhuhr's time ends. If you simply let the time pass without praying and arrive at Asr's time, the schools differ, but the safer position is to make tawbah and pray both at Asr's time.

If I'm flying during prayer time, can I delay?

Yes, you can use jamak ta'khir if you can pray at the landing destination. If the next prayer's time will pass too, pray on the plane to the best of your ability (sitting, facing your direction of travel if Qibla is unknown). Don't miss the prayer.

What about sunnah rawatib on travel?

The Prophet ﷺ did not pray the regular sunnah rawatib of Dhuhr, Asr, and Isha on travel, but he did pray the sunnah of Fajr and Witr consistently. So on travel, focus on Fajr's 2 sunnah and Witr; the others are dropped.

I'm at a hotel: do I still qasar?

If your total stay is within your school's threshold (Hanafi <15 days, majority <4 days), yes. If you're staying longer, you're a resident for prayer purposes and you pray full.
